The Facility

What makes Karuna universal/accessible?

Karuna was built in such a way that all areas of the workplace are accessible to the workers regardless of their physical ability, from the working area to the washroom, kitchen, and residential areas.

What is universal design?

According to the Centre for Excellence in Universal Design, "Universal Design (UD) is the design and composition of an environment so that it can be accessed, understood and used to the greatest extent possible by all people regardless of their age, size, ability or disability. An environment (or any building, product, or service in that environment) should be designed to meet the needs of all people who wish to use it."

Features of Karuna Universal Weaving Facility

Some of the key features that make Karuna an accessible workplace are:

  • Wheelchair ramps with handrails between floors that follow ADA compliance
  • Accessible bathroom with handrails
  • A wheelchair lift (made in Nepal)
  • Non-obstructive doorways and paths to all common areas
  • Optimal placement of switches and spaces under tables in order to accommodate wheelchair users
