Urgyen and Sangita had a shared vision for supporting and empowering marginalized groups through employment in the handicraft industry. After initiating various projects through EPSA, they realized that involving EPSA Nepal’s artisans through carpet weaving had immense potential.
In 2022, a project to build 'Karuna' was drafted up after an initial plan to teach carpet weaving to artisans with disabilities at Karnor was stalled by the Covid pandemic. After the pandemic, Urgyen and Sangita were more resolved than ever to push the project forward for its immense impact on EPSA and the larger community of persons with disabilities, as well as its transformative potential on the rug and the handicrafts industry in general. After the founders successfully recruited supporters for initial funding, Karuna Universal Weaving Facility was completed in 2023 at EPSA Nepal quarters in Kathmandu, a great milestone in the progress towards accessibility and inclusivity in Nepal.
We envision a world where everyone has equal opportunities to make a living, thrive and succeed. At Karuna Facility, we strive to be a model for inclusivity, accessibility, and empowerment by applying key principles of universal design and accessibility in our workplaces and primarily hiring persons with disabilities.
Karuna is a rug weaving facility in Nepal producing handknotted Tibetan rugs. A wide range of qualities can be produced at Karuna, from 40 knots to 120 knots per square inch density in any material.
Karnor and EPSA partner together to launch Tibetan carpet weaving training for weavers with disabilities
Covid pandemic results in worldwide lockdowns, including in Nepal, which leads to a postponement of training completion.
A new plan is made to build a carpet weaving facility at EPSA Nepal quarters in Tarakeshwor, Kathmandu. Urgyen and Sangita work in earnest to draft up a plan and successfully fundraise enough money to start building the weaving facility. The first batch of participants start their training at Karuna Universal Weaving Facility in November of 2024
In March, the first batch of trainees successfully complete their weaving certification, with a ceremony at Karnor presided by Nepal Carpet Manufacturers and Exporters Association (NCMEA) President Tenzing Sherpa and CEO Amrit Tamang, as well as supporting organization LabelStep. Karuna is successfully shortlisted as one of the organizations for Zero Project, with winning awardees to be announced end of year.
